Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut

After the company founding in 1870 in downtown Hartford under Steven Maslen, Karl Beij moved the business founded in 1901 and opened for business on New Britain Avenue across from the Trinity College campus grounds in 1913. Ever since, for many decades and to present day, Beij, Williams & Zito, Inc. works on various commissions on that site. Listed here are some of those that still exist on the grounds today, both outside and inside the buildings.

Historic architecture often featured blank blocks of stone intended for a future carvings. There are many such representations of this type of sculpture, plaques and lettering on Trinity College’s campus grounds: the Long Walk, the Cloister, the Admissions Building, the Chapel and other locations. In 1989, to commemorate 20 years of co-education at Trinity, Beij, Williams & Zito, Inc. was commissioned to carve a male and female head on one of the existing Indiana Limestone protrusions left uncarved from the 1870s when Seabury Hall was built.

Built in the 1870s, the Long Walk at Trinity College in Hartford , Connecticut is comprised of three connected historic buildings – Seabury Hall, Northam Tower and Jarvis Hall. Their arches cojoin what stands as the west boundary of the Main Quadrangle. Fuller Arch in Northam Tower is the largest of these and is centrally located on the Longwalk. The Arch houses the Wall of Honor; eight large East Longmeadow Chocolate Brown brownstone plaques that list 200 donor names for their gifts to the College. Starting in 2000, Beij, Williams & Zito, Inc. annually carved the donor names. The Fuller family (Fuller Brush) donated $39 million to the College and the Arch, formerly known as Northam Arch, was named after them. At that time, Beij, Williams & Zito, Inc. was also commissioned to install two bronze plaques on the wall and bronze letters on the bluestone floor.

Trinity Chapel, built in 1933 of Indiana Limestone, is a Collegiate Gothic structure. It was designed by Philip H. Frohman of the firm Frohman, Robb & Little, who also designed the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. In the West entryway and in the North Porch entryway, handcarved lettering was started by John T. Zito, Jr. in 1980 and was later taken over by John T. Zito, III in 1987. The West Entryway carvings are covered at this present time but the North Porch carvings are still visible. They house the names and dates of those individuals whose ashes are interred in the cremains garden outside.

J. Wendell Burger was the first name carved by John III when he was 22 years old. All subsequent names to present day on both plaques were carved by him.

The Trinity Chapel Cremains Garden is marked by a wonderful handcarved 15th century baptismal font and the bas-relief Celtic cross on the wall of the chapel above was handcarved by John T. Zito, Jr. in 1984.

In 1989, John T. Zito Jr. carved this double head by hand on a scaffolding from a square block that was left protruding out of the architecture of the Seabury Hall building at Trinity College. It was said, after he finished the piece, that it looked exactly like the current quarterback of the Trinity College football team.
